The Pike Stories Comic Book

I'm working on a comic book project, and I have good progress.

How do you write a comic book? How long does it take to write it?

One might think I would have considered this before announcing, back in 2020 that I was working on a comic book about the Historic Long Beach Pike. I called it The Pike Stories and took out an ad in the Grunion Gazette. We got 2 campers (one from the Bay Area) and did a weeklong Zoom experience. It was the first COVID-19 year and Zoom was becoming a thing.

We developed a few activities and I held an experience about the Pike over a few weekends. There was a walking tour and a prize at the end.

Since then, I have written a book with a now 95 year old who grew up at the Pike, my interns from the EXP program developed an activity book we are still working to publish, and several artists (including an Emmy Award winning artist, Rafael Navarro and my husband, Don Schmidt) have drawn scenes and images that will be used in our comic book. Comic book creator and event organizer Mike Wellman will work with Rafael on a story about Elmer McCurdy. We have made postcards with some of the artist images.

I also have been working with a 13 year old in the U.K. about youth time-and-space-traveling from Great Yarmouth Pleasure Beach in Norwich to the historic Long Beach Pike in Long Beach, California. It's hard, for sure.

I am pleased to share that LeClair Pearson has undertaking the moving forward of The Pike Stories comic book. It is now 4+ years since that first announcement, but the support is growing.
