Nine applications were submitted, though three candidates withdrew and one did not attend an interview, Kulak said.
A subcommittee consisting of Canton Board of Education Chairman Lou Daniels, Kulak, and board member Russell Bush interviewed five candidates on Feb. 5.
“They were thoroughly impressed by all of the candidates,” Kulak said, but LaChance “stood out and rose to the top because of her qualifications and the value her skills can bring to specific challenges currently facing the board.”
Kulak said LaChance brings experience with the state school construction grant program as well as policy development and strategic planning.
Those skills could be valuable as the district deals with aging facilities and related budget pressures.
Her professional background includes work as an attorney for the state, the General Assembly, and the Department of Administrative Services, Kulak said.
She also noted LaChance’s familiarity with state statutes and regulations affecting schools.
Kulak said the subcommittee unanimously recommended LaChance to the full board.
Following the vote, Canton Town Clerk Tracy Morrocco administered the oath of office. LaChance was sworn in and seated as a board member right away.
The board is expected to continue addressing infrastructure needs and budget considerations in upcoming meetings.
