Farmington Announces Labor Day Holiday Impacts

The unofficial last weekend of the summer is this weekend, with municipalities recently unveiling what will be closed on Monday, Sept. 2.

FARMINGTON, CT —Summer's last fling is this weekend and Farmington officials have recently announced how the Labor Day holiday will impact town schools and services.

All town offices and schools will be closed on Monday, Sept. 2, in observance of Labor Day and regular hours of operation will resume on Tuesday, Sept. 3.

For Farmington residents who have trash and recycling collection by the town's contractor (Waste Material Trucking Co.), there will be no change in the collection day during the week of Labor Day.

All carts must be placed at the curb the night before the normal collection day or no later than 5 a.m. of the collection day.

Otherwise, customers run the risk of missing a collection and having to wait until the following week.

Labor Day history

The holiday was born out of the nation's labor movement and has, since, evolved into the notion of summer's last hurrah for all.

It is always the first Monday in September and, according to the U.S. Department of Labor, it is "an annual celebration of the social and economic achievements of American workers."

"The holiday is rooted in the late 19th century when labor activists pushed for a federal holiday to recognize the many contributions workers have made to America’s strength, prosperity, and well-being," reads the U.S. Department of Labor website.
