Fair Haven Community Health Care (FHCHC) and Connecticut Foodshare collaboration will help combat food insecurity and improve health outcomes for patients across the New Haven community. The Connecticut Foodshare weekly donation of 500-600 pounds of food per week directly support FHCHC&rsquo;s Food as Medicine program, an initiative designed to address the connection between nutrition and chronic disease. Through this program, patients experiencing food insecurity receive access to fresh, healthy food alongside medical care, nutrition counseling, and ongoing support. The need is significant. Approximately 32% of FHCHC patients screened positive for food and financial insecurity, and 67% of all patients fell below the federal poverty level. In addition, nearly 31% of adult patients experienced chronic illness in 2024&mdash; conditions often closely linked to diet and limited access to nutritious food. &ldquo;Access to healthy food is a critical part of healthcare,&rdquo; said Dr. Suzanne Lagarde, FHCHC CEO. &ldquo;We are deeply grateful to Connecticut Foodshare for their partnership and commitment to our community. This support allows us to address food insecurity not just as a social issue, but as a healthcare priority.&rdquo; FHCHC integrates medical, behavioral health, dental, and pharmacy services to provide comprehensive, patient-centered care. The Food as Medicine program is directed by a licensed Registered Dietitian who works with patients and their families to develop nutrition plans tailored to their medical needs. The focus is often on conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, heart-disease and obesity, where nutrition plays a critical role in prevention and management. Patients receive guidance on meal preparation specific to their condition and access healthy foods that support their dietary goals. By combining nutrition education with access to healthy foods, FHCHC and Connecticut Foodshare are working together to improve health outcomes, reduce the long-term impact of chronic disease, and address food insecurity in the community. In addition, FHCHC partners with local community organizations like CitySeed and Haven&rsquo;s Harvest to further expand access to fresh, nutritious food and strengthen community-based support. Supporters Can Help Unlock a $10,000 Donation by Voting for Their Agent Giving Story
Liberty Mutual and Safeco Insurance have awarded Abbate Insurance Associates, Inc. a 2026 Make More Happen&trade; Award for its impactful partnership with Linens of Love, a nonprofit that provides linens, blankets, towels, comforters, and toiletries to individuals and families in need across the Greater New Haven community and beyond. The award includes a $5,000 donation, which can be doubled to $10,000 through online community support. 
Starting March 2, Abbate Insurance Associates, Inc. and Linens of Love&rsquo;s story will be featured on the official Make More Happen microsite at agentgiving.com/abbate-insurance-associates, where supporters can vote to help unlock the full $10,000 donation. If the story receives at least 750 combined votes and comments, the $5,000 award will be doubled. The funding would allow Linens of Love to restock essential inventory, expand service to new partner organizations, and meet rising demand across the community. 
Linens of Love was founded by Mary B. Pursell, President and Principal of Abbate Insurance Associates, Inc., after a Midnight Run visit that revealed a critical yet often-overlooked need: access to clean, comfortable linens for people transitioning out of shelters, families reunited after separation, and veterans in need. Today, the nonprofit collaborates with a network of 15 social service agencies to help neighbors begin their next chapter with dignity and comfort. 
&ldquo;Offering stability and reassurance is core to what insurance agencies do. Our team believes that a warm bed and clean linens are a simple, powerful way to restore dignity,&rdquo; said Pursell. &ldquo;All staffing, office space, storage, and overhead for Linens of Love are provided by Abbate Insurance Associates, Inc. so that nearly 100% of donations go directly to buying the items our neighbors need.&rdquo; 
Abbate Insurance Associates, Inc. employees play a hands-on role in keeping Linens of Love running&mdash;contributing time, muscle, and donations by loading cars, carrying items to the office pick-up point, and supporting daily operations. As demand continues to grow, Linens of Love has expanded its partnerships, including supplying CT Beds with sheets, comforters, and pillows for 80 twin beds from May through December of this past year and launching a new collaboration with Someone Cares Closet of the Yale Child Study Center.

The College Access Collaborative of Connecticut (CAC) is a community based educational consulting organization focused on improving college access, financial aid completion, and postsecondary readiness for first generation, multilingual, adult, and historically underserved students across Connecticut. CAC partners with high schools, adult education programs, nonprofits, and community organizations to provide hands on support with FAFSA completion, AACTUS guidance for undocumented and mixed status students, college applications, scholarship navigation, and enrollment planning. Services are delivered through workshops, small group sessions, and individualized advising, particularly during peak college and financial aid seasons when schools are often stretched beyond capacity. CAC’s work is designed to strengthen and extend existing counseling and outreach efforts, not replace them. What makes CAC distinct is its relationship centered and culturally responsive approach.
