WILLINGTON, CT — Willington Public Library Director Steve Osier is asking residents to contact the Willington Board of Finance regarding $50,000 in library funding. The Board of Finance is expected to make a decision on the matter on March 19 at the earliest.
Osier stated that the library board had agreed in 2025 to use $50,000 in investment income to offset town appropriation reductions.
"This agreement was made with the clear understanding that the funding would be restored in the current budget year," Osier said. He added that discussions indicate the Board of Finance may not restore the funds. Osier described the situation as "a one-time measure to offset reductions to the town's library appropriation."
Osier reported that losing $50,000 from the library’s operating budget would have "consequences for the community."
He added, "The library would need to reduce days of operation and cut staff. Materials purchased for residents would be reduced. Services residents rely on would be impacted, and reduced hours would lead to fewer visitors and less revenue."
Osier noted that the Willington Public Library utilizes town funding, donations, grants, investment income, and fiscal prudence to serve the community. He said that town support "remains the backbone of the library's ability to operate."
He added, "The agreement made last year was clear, and honoring that commitment is essential to maintaining stable library services for Willington residents."
Osier is encouraging residents who "value the library" to "respectfully ask the Willington Board of Finance to restore the $50,000 in funding." He added that "community voices can help ensure the library remains a strong, accessible resource for everyone."
The Willington Board of Finance meeting on March 19 will address this funding decision.
