'Tensions Escalate,' Man Breaks Car Window As Crowd Gathers Around Federal Officers: Aurora Police

AURORA, IL — A man was taken into custody Thursday morning after police say he smashed the window of a moving vehicle as a crowd gathered around federal officers on an Aurora street, police said.

Aurora police were dispatched at 10:26 a.m. for "a disturbance" in the vicinity of New York Street and North Madison Street. There, a large crowd was gathered around federal officers in the road, police said.

Officials said police stayed in the area to monitor and ensure the situation did not escalate. But tensions rose, police said, leading to the man breaking the window.

He was taken into custody "to prevent further violence or property damage," police said.

"The Aurora Police Department respects the rights of all people to exercise their First Amendment rights and reminds everyone of the importance of doing so peacefully and with respect for the safety of others," officials said.

Police did not release the man's name and what, if any, charges he could face.
