Report Of Potential Gunshot Was Likely Resident Attempting To Distract Wildlife: Batavia Police

BATAVIA, IL — A report of a possible gunshot and a person screaming Wednesday morning in Batavia was likely a resident attempting to "disturb or distract wildlife," police said.

The Batavia Police Department received the 911 call with the concern at about 9:25 a.m., prompting officers to be dispatched to the 600 block of Kramer Court.

As a precaution, two schools were instructed to "enact their internal protocols to safeguard their students and faculty" while an investigation ensued. There was no direct or immediate threat to the schools, police said.

Investigators canvassed the area and spoke to several residents who reported hearing a single gunshot or firework, according to a news release. Police determined the sound likely came from the 200 block of South Forest Avenue but could not find the exact origin.

"Based on witness statements and available information, officers determined it was likely a resident attempting to disturb or distract wildlife," officials said in the release.

Officers found no evidence of anyone being shot or injured, leading to police clearing the area and schools resuming normal operations.
