Electric Rate Increase Begins In November For Geneva Residents

Geneva City Council voted Aug. 7 to approve the new rate plan to pay fixed costs for the city's electric utility.

GENEVA, IL — Beginning Nov. 15, the average Geneva resident will see a 3.5 percent increase on the electric portion of their utility bill.

Geneva City Council voted Aug. 7 to approve the new rate plan to pay fixed costs for the city's electric utility along with capital projects that will benefit residential, commercial and industrial customers, officials said. The plan calls for three stepped rate adjustments spread out over five years; the next increases will come in 2025 and 2027.

The city also adopted one energy rate — $0.11210 per kilowatt-hour — regardless of the amount of energy used.

Next month, the fixed monthly charge for electricity will increase from $6.75 to $8 and will remain at $8 until at least 2028. Coupled with the new energy rate, the average residential electric bill will spike from $88.85 to $92.08 monthly.

Officials cited the COVID-19 pandemic as the reason why they deferred increases to the electric rate plan, last implemented in 2012.
