Obituary: Sonya Elizabeth Sandstrom, 25, of Belmont

Sandstrom died Monday, Jan. 12.

Sonya Elizabeth Sandstrom, 25, daughter of Harold Sandstrom and Wanda Bacon of Belmont and sister of Raisa Sandstrom of Northampton, died in her sleep at her home in Belmont on Monday, Jan. 12, 2015.

Born Oct. 3, 1989, in New York City, she lived most of her life in Belmont, was a graduate of Belmont High School and was a student at the Woods College of Advancing Studies at Boston College. She worked at a number of jobs in and around Boston, most notably Jewish Community Center Preschool of Brighton and United Cerebral Palsy of MetroBoston in Watertown. A compassionate young woman, Sonya participated in organized walks and other charitable fundraising events, including the annual Kostick Kup ski race and dinner for New England Disabled Sports.

In addition to her parents and sister, survivors include her grandparents Ada and Charles Bacon of Batavia, New York, her grandmother Judith Hawke of Killingworth, Connecticut, and many loving aunts, uncles and cousins.

Visitation will be held at 4-7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 16, at Brown & Hickey Funeral Home, 36 Trapelo Road, Belmont. Relatives and friends are welcome for open house at 59 Slade St. in Belmont after the wake. Burial will take place in the spring at a location to be decided.
