MIT Professor Killed In Brookline Home

The man died after being rushed to the hospital for emergency surgery.

BROOKLINE, MA — A professor at MIT was shot and killed Monday night at his Brookline home, authorities confirmed.

Nuno F.G. Loureiro, 47, was found suffering from gunshot wounds after police responded to his home on Gibbs St. at approximately 8:30 p.m. He was rushed to Beth Israel Hospital in Boston, where he later died from his injuries on Tuesday morning.

In a statement to Boston 25, MIT confirmed Loureiro was a faculty member in the departments of nuclear science & engineering and physics. He was also the director of the school’s Plasma Science and Fusion Center.

"On behalf of the Brookline Police Department, I would like to extend my deepest condolences to the family, friends, and loved ones of Nuno F.G. Loureiro during this incredibly difficult time," Brookline Police Chief Jennifer Paster said in a statement. "Our thoughts are with all those who have been affected by this tragic loss."

No arrests have been made regarding the incident. Paster added that the presence of patrol cars, officers, and unmarked units will increase in the vicinity of Gibbs Street as the investigation continues.

On Wednesday, police increased their presence on the campus of MIT. The university announced key card access will be required for all buildings at least through this coming weekend.
