WESTBOROUGH, MA — Westborough residents will head to the polls to vote on three seats on the town's Trustees of the Public Library, and current member Dorothy Mello has announced her candidacy for re-election.

Mello, who has lived in Westborough for close to 40 years, said if elected, this will be her fifth term as a Public Library Trustee.

As a literature teacher in the school district, Mello told Patch that's part of the reason she wanted to be involved in the library.

"While we do not pick out books or articles for the collection.. I'm drawn to the library because that's reading, literature, writing," Mello told Patch. "That's my field, and to make sure that continues to flourish in the library, I'm happy to be part of that."

In Westborough, the group of nine, known as the Trustees of the Public Library, does a number of things, including hiring the library's director and setting policy for staff and patrons.

Mello said she has also served on smaller committees during her time as a Public Library Trustee, such as the construction committee, especially as the library undergoes renovations.

However, Mello said she is looking forward to seeing the construction through.

She told Patch that residents wanted to keep the library downtown in its original traditional building, which was part of the reason for the renovations. Right now, it's temporarily located in the community center.

"I feel strongly about having a library that meets the needs of the public and is in a good and serviceable condition," Mello said. "I think the library provides something for all patrons, from tiny tots to adults."

The longtime resident has worked as an English teacher in Westborough for most of her career and also serves as a substitute teacher in the district.

"Because of my business in the schools, I've had the pleasure of seeing many students grow up, and many come back to Westborough," Mello said. "It's good to live here, the town tries to do as much as they can with tax dollars to make it a quality place for people to live, kids to grow up, seniors to enjoy in their maturity."

Westborough's Annual Town Election will take place on March 10. Polls are open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Residents will vote on 12 open positions on the ballot, including seats on the Select Board, School Committee, Planning Board, Moderator, Town Clerk, Trustees of the Public Library and a contested race for one open seat on the Westborough Housing Authority.
