Man Riding E-Bike Hit, Killed By Atlantic Highlands Police Officer In Patrol Car

An Atlantic Highlands Police officer, driving a marked patrol car, collided with a man riding an e-bike on Rt. 36 in Middletown.

MIDDLETOWN, NJ — An Atlantic Highlands Police officer, driving a marked patrol car, collided with a man riding an e-bike Oct. 10 on Rt. 36 in Middletown, the office of New Jersey Attorney General Matt Platkin announced Friday.

The man riding the e-bike was airlifted to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune, where he died of his injures October 19.

This happened at 1:00 p.m. on that date, said the Attorney General. The police car and the e-bike collided on Rt. 36 in the area of Orchard Avenue.

The identity of the man riding the e-bike and the identity of the police officer involved are not being released at this time.

The Attorney General’s Office of Public Integrity and Accountability is now investigating the incident, as the AG is required by law to to investigate a person’s death when it occurs during an encounter with a law enforcement officer.
