Missing Mom With Dementia Found In Bergen County Woods With Help Of Drone: Video

A beloved former teacher was lost in the Bergen County woods. A drone helped locate her, said police.

WESTWOOD, NJ — After a police dog couldn't find a missing Bergen County mom who was lost in the woods on Wednesday, a drone helped locate her, said police.

The police in Westwood posted on social media on Wednesday night that they were looking for a person with dementia who was missing.

Community members weighed in to say they remembered her as a beloved kindergarten teacher for decades.

"She is the sweetest and kindest person," wrote one woman.

The next day, police posted that she had been found, including a video of how modern technology helped.

"A search of the area was conducted," they wrote, "and a police canine was called into assist. The canine lost its track once it came to a more populated area. Utilizing 21st-century technology, the Westwood Police Department deployed a drone with infrared capabilities, which located a heat signature along a wooded embankment."

They added, "The missing person was located and received medical assistance and was transported to the hospital for evaluation. This is a happy ending to a difficult situation. Thank you to ... the Borough and for funding these initiatives that bring out the best in modern policing."

Two relatives posted how relieved they were.

"Thank you to the whole Westwood community, the police department, sheriff's department & the strangers who became friends in searching for my mom," wrote a woman. "We saw the good & beauty in humanity tonight and we will not soon forget it."
