Blood Samples Taken From Man Charged In Wrong-Way Rt. 27 Fatal Crash In Woodbridge
Blood was taken from Silvino Ruiz Alonso, who police say drove head-first into Amber Torres' car, killing her. Toxicology is not back yet.

WOODBRIDGE, NJ — Blood samples were taken from Silvino Ruiz Alonso, the Iselin man who police say drove head-first into a car driven by a 22-year-old Colonia woman last month, killing her.
The blood samples were sent to a toxicology lab to be tested for any evidence of drugs or alcohol in his system; the toxicology report is not back yet, a spokeswoman for the Middlesex County Prosecutor said Monday. It can take several weeks, sometimes more than a month, to get toxicology reports back from the state lab.
"There have been no DUI charges as of yet; the investigation is still ongoing," a spokeswoman for Middlesex County Prosecutor Linda Estremera said Monday.

Ruiz Alonso, 28, is charged with first-degree aggravated manslaughter and second-degree vehicular homicide for the death of Amber Torres, a Colonia High School graduate who was just months away from her college graduation from Rutgers. His first scheduled court appearance is this Thursday.
Prosecutors say on Feb. 18, Ruiz Alonso was headed the wrong way on Rt. 27. He was driving south in the northbound lanes.

Torres was headed north. At 10:36 p.m. that evening, the two cars — his 2013 Hyundai Tucson and her 2025 Nissan Altima — struck each other in a head-on collision.
"Amber was the only one who lost her life that night. She had so much life ahead of her, so many plans, ambitions and milestones yet to reach," said her grieving family on this GoFundMe.
Torres was killed. Her front-seat passenger, a 21-year-old woman also from Colonia, was seriously injured. Ruiz Alonso was also critically injured, and spent more than a week in the hospital.
Ruiz Alonso was also charged with second-degree aggravated assault, second-degree assault by auto and third-degree endangering.
