Westchester County Youth Bureau Celebrates National 'Lights On Afterschool'

Joins with Community Partner to Highlight Impacts of Afterschool Programming

The Westchester County Youth Bureau joined with the Boys and Girls Club of Northern Westchester to celebrate "Lights On Afterschool," this year observed nationwide on October 23. The annual initiative brings together more than 8,000 events showcasing the important role of afterschool programs in supporting youth, families, and communities.

Westchester County Executive Ken Jenkins said: "For more than two decades, 'Lights On Afterschool' has been a powerful reminder of the vital role these programs play in the lives of millions of children, youth, and families. From academic support to sports, arts, STEM, and mentorship, afterschool programs help students thrive—both inside and outside the classroom. Our Westchester County Youth Bureau and local Youth Bureaus work hand-in-hand with partner organizations to support quality, safe and supervised afterschool programs that promote social, emotional, physical, and educational well-being."

Westchester County Youth Bureau Executive Director Ernest McFadden said: "Each year, 'Lights On Afterschool' brings communities across the nation together to celebrate the life-changing impact of afterschool and youth-serving programs. Now in its 26th year, this movement is more than just a celebration—it's a call to action, a symbol of resilience and a tribute to the power of learning beyond the school day."

"In today's society—where families juggle demanding schedules, students face increasing academic and social pressures, and communities strive for equity and opportunity—afterschool programs have never been more essential. They also support working families, giving peace of mind to parents and caregivers who know their children are in capable hands during critical hours. After school programs empower youth to discover their passions, build confidence, and become tomorrow's leaders."

Boys & Girls Club of Northern Westchester CEO Alyzza C. Ozer, Esq. said: "We are thrilled to celebrate the partnership of BGCNW and Westchester County as we celebrate 'Lights On Afterschool.' Together, we have literally changed the trajectory of over 300,000 kids and families, providing a second home and safe place for children 3 to 18 years of age to learn, explore, grow, and make great friends and futures. Joint programs include College Quest, Workforce Development, and Wellness and Fitness. We run over 40 programs including bi-lingual academic support and Head Start at our adjacent elementary school in Mount Kisco. Over 85 percent of our educators are bilingual. The impact of the wellness program is transformative, making all other programs that much more effective. We have conducted over 7,800 one-on-one therapeutic sessions with our on-site clinicians and serve as a supervisory center for Ph.D. and Masters students. These invaluable wellness skills are integrated in all age groups and programs.”
