Volunteer Opportunities Of The Week: Robotics Competition Event Helpers

Every week, Patch will spotlight volunteer opportunities in the Hudson Valley courtesy of Volunteer New York!.

HUDSON VALLEY, NY — Each week, Patch will be highlighting volunteer opportunities in the Lower Hudson Valley, courtesy of Volunteer New York!. This is a chance to help your community and be an opportunity to give back — perhaps in a way you didn't consider before.

This week, we are putting the spotlight on some opportunities in the Hudson Valley.

Invasive Plant Management at Ward Pound Ridge Reservation

Volunteers are needed to help Westchester Parks Foundation manage invasive plants, including shrubs and vines, at various locations throughout Ward Pound Ridge Reservation. This is the perfect opportunity for small groups, court mandated volunteers, and volunteers ages 14+ (or 12+ with an adult).
Date: 3/11 & 3/13 from 10 a.m.-1 p.m.

Robotics Competition Event Helpers

The FIRST Robotics Hudson Valley Regional Competition brings together high school students from across New York State and as far away as Taipei for a 3-day competition showcasing a 100-pound robot that they've designed and built. Volunteers are needed to assist with the event as photographers, judges, safety attendants, and more. Volunteers must be 18+.

Mentors for Young Adult Foster Youth

Volunteer Mentors provide one-on-one guidance to current or former foster youth on a variety of subjects, including financial literacy, career development, health and wellness, and essential life skills. All mentors are provided with curriculum and a playbook, and volunteers can choose how they work with their protégé in a way that best suits their schedule. Volunteers must be 21+, complete a background check and training, and commit to meeting their mentee for 60 minutes three times per month for six months.
Date: Flexible schedule; 3x monthly for 6 months

Passover Friendly Visit and Package Delivery

DOROT's Passover Package Delivery brings hundreds of older adults and volunteers together to share warmth and companionship. Volunteers are needed to deliver a thoughtful, seasonal care package and stay for a 30-45 minute social visit with an older neighbor. All new Package Delivery volunteers will be required to attend a mandatory Zoom orientation. Volunteers must be 18+ (or 10+ as part of an adult's team) and have a valid U.S. government-issued photo ID.
Date: 3/22 from 10:30 a.m.-12 p.m.; register by 3/16, mandatory training on 3/17
