East Islip Resident and Nassau Community College Student Channels Broadway at Roosevelt Field

Fashion Design students revealed looks inspired by Broadway during live competition at Roosevelt Field

Lexie Buser (left) of East Islip and model Jennifer Ginsburg recently participated in Roosevelt Field’s Broadway by Design, a competition between fashion design students from Nassau Community College.

A total of seven designers from Nassau Community College each created a customized look for their model inspired by Broadway’s PIPPIN, MOTOWN the Musical or Rodgers + Hammerstein’s CINDERELLA. They were required to stay within a $100 budget for materials and complete the process in a six-week timetable.

The looks were revealed during a live action runway presentation and judged by a distinguished panel. Top runway honors went to student designer Rebecca Tenace (right) of Shirley for her take on Pippin, a black coatdress with a sequined train, complete with a top hat, modeled by Nassau Community College student Alison Riso. Rebecca received a prize package that included tickets to a Broadway show, a meet-and-greet with a professional Broadway costume designer and a gift bag from Roosevelt Field.

Among the remaining students who competed in Broadway by Design include Nicole Sanchez of Plainview and model Linda Jean-Baptiste; Ciara Lunghi of Massapequa and model Leah Wong; Rebecca Canales of Rockville Centre and model Gissell Diaz-Tineo; Amanda Silverberg of North Babylon and model Katie Lembo; and Nicky Kotas of East Meadow and model Jasmine Jean-Baptiste.

“We were thrilled to host this exhilarating program and provide these talented students with exposure to the wide audience at Roosevelt Field,” commented Nancy Gilbert, director of mall marketing for Roosevelt Field. “All the looks were unique and captured the look and feel of the chosen Broadway show. Congratulations to the winner and all the students who truly went above and beyond for this challenge.”

“Our students really enjoyed taking on the Broadway theme and we’re pleased with the results of their efforts,” commented Sharyne Wolfe, professor at Nassau Community College. “Participating in the Broadway by Design competition was a tremendous experience for these talented designers and one that will benefit them as they complete their education and move onto careers in the fashion industry.”
