PITTSBURGH, PA — The Allegheny County Health Department has issued a consumer alert for Kuhn's Market, on Highwood Street in the city's Marshall-Shadeland section, for a significant health violation.

During an Oct. 15 inspection, a live mouse was seen near the frozen food display freezers. A dead mouse was found in a trap in the back stock room.

Chewed products and rodent droppings were found including several bags of potato chips. Multiple food shelves contained rodent droppings, as did packages of bagged flour.

"Observations indicate that this facility has a significant rodent infestation which is affecting foods for sale," the inspection report stated.

"Staff have indicated that they are removing rodent droppings and chewed food products daily. Pest control is clearly inadequate, and there are large openings in multiple locations that allow pest entry. At the previous inspection, the conditions to avoid administrative action included sealing all doors and providing comprehensive pest control reports. Neither of these things occurred."

A restaurant with a consumer alert placard is allowed to operate for a temporary period not exceeding 10 days. Another inspection is conducted either prior to the expiration of the temporary period upon request of the eatery owner or on the tenth day.
