Police said she went to that area, and the van drove off, but the mother followed the vehicle as it headed toward Folcroft, near the 7-Eleven on Delmar Drive.
The man tried to rip the boy's clothes off and tried to sexually assault him before throwing him out of the moving vehicle, police said.
Authorities said the mother's actions likely stopped additional harm to the boy.
The suspects were described as light-skinned men, possibly black or Hispanic, who appeared to be in their 40s, police said.
"Please stay alert, especially when walking alone or at night," Glenolden Police said on social media.
Police recommended keeping smartphones on hand and be sure the phone's location is shared with a trusted person.
