Police Release Enhanced Image Of 2nd Person Of Interest In Brown University Mass Shooting

The police chief also said DNA evidence has been recovered and the mayor reported a second victim has been discharged from the hospital.

PROVIDENCE, RI — The Providence Police Department is now seeking a second person in connection with the deadly mass shooting at Brown University as the hunt for the elusive killer entered its fifth day Wednesday.

This person was "in proximity of the (original) person of interest," police said in a media release.

"We have video footage that determines to us and the detectives that can tell that this person was in the vicinity where the subject of interest was that we actually have an interest in," Providence Police Chief Oscar L. Perez said during a Wednesday media briefing.

Perez said this second person was "close, close enough that we feel we need to speak to them."

The Providence Police Department has also disseminated enhanced images and videos of the original person of interest, who remains unidentified and at large.

"Anyone with information is urged to submit tips at fbi.gov/brownuniversityshooting or contact the Providence Police tip line at 401-272-3121," the department said in a media release.

Perez also said police have recovered DNA evidence.

"There's actual physical evidence, there's DNA evidence, there's a lot of evidence we're collecting to ensure that we can find the answer," said Perez, who called the case "intense."

"It's definitely intense and I believe the most intense investigation going on right now in this nation," he said.

The man identified as a person of interest was caught on video casing the Barus & Holley engineering and physics building where he killed two and injured at least eight others hours before the Saturday afternoon gun attack, said Providence Police Chief Oscar L. Perez.

"That's what criminals do," Perez said during a Tuesday afternoon media briefing.

"We do know that he was casing the area, and again, that's what criminals do," Perez said.

During the Wednesday briefing, Providence Mayor Brett Smiley said a second of eight patients hospitalized following the shooting has been released from care.

Of the six remaining hospitalized, one is in critical condition but stable, Smiley said, and the other five are stable.

An online petition calling for safety collaboration between the Rhode Island School of Design and Brown University was started in the wake of the shooting.

The Change.Org petition, started Saturday, shortly after the Brown University shooting, already has more than 2,700 signatures.

"Calling on RISD and Brown to collaborate on a unified emergency alert system," reads the "issue" the petition addresses.

A candlelight vigil was held to honor the victims of the shooting. The Sunday night vigil at Lippitt Memorial Park was planned as a Christmas tree and Hanukkah menorah lighting.
