With a distinctive sound that resists categorization, Grammy-nominated violinist, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Andrew Bird makes his debut with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra. Balancing swelling sounds with jazz, folk, and pop melodies in an unforgettable display of unique virtuosity, Bird celebrates the 20th anniversary of his acclaimed record The Mysterious Production of Eggs. Featuring a top-to-bottom album performance with orchestral arrangements, Bird caps off the performance with a suite of fan-favorite tunes from his near 30-year repertoire.
Since beginning his recording career in 1997, Andrew Bird has released 18 albums and performed extensively across the globe, headlining concerts at Carnegie Hall, Sydney Opera House, Walt Disney Concert Hall, Red Rocks Amphitheatre, and festivals worldwide. Bird has been a featured TED Talks presenter, a New Yorker Festival guest, and an op-ed contributor for the New York Times. He performed as the Whistling Caruso in Disney’s The Muppets and scored the FX Series Baskets. Shortly after receiving his 2020 Grammy nomination for Best Folk Album, Bird made his professional acting debut in the cast of FX’s Fargo. The Dinner Detective True Crime Murder Mystery Dinner Show - Buffalo, NY

This program will take listeners on a tour of melodies hailing from around the world. Bacewicz’s six-minute Overture for Orchestra was composed during the German occupation of Poland and offers an exciting, perpetually shifting palette of colors. The short duration of this Overture does not keep Bacewicz from demonstrating a litany of orchestral sounds and moods in her composition, overlooked until recently. Meanwhile, Spaniard Joaquin Rodrigo’s animated Concierto de Aranjuez features elaborate instrumentation for classical guitar. The piece took its first recorded form as a Braille manuscript carried into Spain by Rodrigo at the outbreak of the Second World War. Fauré’s Pelléas et Mélisande Suite offers a contemplative reprieve in a romantic and tragic orchestral retelling of elicit lovers and their star-crossed fate, and Alexander Borodin brings the program’s close with his colorful Symphony No. 2, which evokes the exuberance of Russian folk dances. This concert brings the songs of people across time and space to listeners for an experience full of diverse musical landscapes.

The concert opens with Franco-Brazilian composer Elodie Bouny’s striking homage to the Amazon rainforest and the destruction it has faced in the form of Ignis—meaning “fire.” The piece serves as a contemporary complement to Mendelssohn’s exquisite and romantic Violin Concerto, which features a turning-point cadenza as a center jewel. Award-winning soloist Amaryn Olmeda brings Mendelssohn’s virtuosic and vivacious melodies to the stage. Countering the sparkling energy of the concerto, but no less joyful, Dvořák’s pastoral Symphony No. 8 vividly depicts Czech songs and dances through rich, pleasing melodies and harmonies. The symphony reflects the composer’s musings on the implications of nature, as well as his own experience enjoying its benefits.

The orchestration is stirring, powerful, and yet restrained at times—evocative of the fact that the symphonic poem was written as the composer’s “battle hymn” for Finland as it faced political opposition. Haydn’s high-spirited and dramatic Cello Concerto No. 1 follows, sparkling and singing under talented young star Sterling Elliot’s fingers. The concerto remained undiscovered for two centuries until its chance 1961 find at the Czech National Library. Unearthed at last, listeners may once again enjoy its thrilling runs, expansive melodies, and delightful interplay between solo and orchestra. Grieg’s four charming&nbsp;Symphonic Dances,&nbsp;inspired by Norwegian folk songs, close the program with jaunty rhythms and folk-dance melodies that played a key role in formalizing Norway’s national identity.

As the first of a trilogy of cantatas, Orff’s irreverent Carmina Burana draws from a 13th century compilation of medieval vagabond songs and poems detailing fate’s fickleness, pagan delights, and corruption. The primitivistic piece enraptures audiences with its hypnotic sensuality, preoccupation with a chant-like and ritualistic style, and powerful rhythms. Fantastic solo voices joined by the Buffalo Philharmonic Chorus sing of the full range of human love, from pining to ecstatic and more. Hindemith’s reworked Symphonic Dances complete the program, which emerged from discarded ballet collaborations. Challenging counterpoint as well as soft, dignified passages constitute this Neo-Classical piece written in a tumultuous era of history.

Our season concludes with three iconic compositions and two orchestral world premieres. The program opens with Bernstein’s toe-tapping Three Dance Episodes from On the Town, a comedic Broadway hit filled with dance, sentimentality, and lightheartedness. The musical spirit of America continues with Copland’s emblematic and patriotic Appalachian Spring: Suite, which blooms with optimism and brims with the tender promise of new life. Starting with its idiosyncratic clarinet glissando, Gershwin’s jazz-infused Rhapsody in Blue swings and sweeps listeners into a different American soundscape where an improvisational-sounding piano line takes the center of this Jazz-age stage. These quintessential American pieces are paired with two works rooted in our own Western New York. Michael Daugherty’s Niagara Falls is a musical journey through one of the world’s great scenic wonders, while Buffalo-born Paul Moravec’s Serenade—inspired by the Great Western Staircase at the New York State Capitol, a marvel of intricate sculpture and history—offers a stirring narrative of ascent and aspiration. This closing concert provides a rich musical portrait of America—both past and present—bound to inspire listeners to appreciate the musical and natural beauty surrounding them.
