Children are invited to our weekly Wednesday program with stories and movement led by early childhood educator Debbie Leibowitz. Story Time A-Go-Go is a lively, interactive program for kids ages 1-4 years old held in the Event Center, or outside in the Courtyard depending on the weather.

Join us on Wednesday, April 8 at 12 p.m. in the Event Center for this month’s Cookbook Club. The Abbot Public Library Cookbook Club aims to be a starting point for a conversation about food, recipes, and an exploration of the evolving American kitchen. At each meeting, a book or theme will be explored in discussions of recipe, construction, background, cooking, display and tasting.

This month, the group will be exploring chef Mary Ann Esposito’s cookbooks. Register to receive the full list of books and recipe sign-up link!
Participants will be encouraged to delve into and enjoy the spirit of the featured books, then choose a recipe that suits their comfort level and budget to bring to the next meeting for tasting. Remember, you eat first with your eyes, so presentation is the invitation. As most cookbook recipes are written for 6 or 8 servings, that will be our tasting amount. Food should travel easily from home to the Library and require minimal heating and set up, keeping in mind that there are minimal kitchen facilities available at the Library.

Linda Bassett, author of “From Apple Pie to Pad Thai: Neighborhood Cooking North of Boston” and food column writer for Marblehead Current, will lead the discussion.

Early revolutionary resistance!&nbsp;

Hear the dramatic tale of Michael Corbett and his Marblehead shipmates who resisted British tyranny at sea on King Hooper's merchant ship, the Pitt Packet - named after a British prime minister who was sympathetic to Americans' grievances - a full year before the 1770 Boston "Massacre" and six years before the Revolutionary War's first battle in 1775. After the mariners killed a British officer who was trying to impress them into British Navy service, they were brought to trial in Boston but were successfully acquitted by a young unknown lawyer named John Adams. That case launched Adams into professional and political prominence, which grew after Adams successfully defended some British officers a year later, after the so-called “Boston Massacre” on March 5 in 1770. In 1775, Corbett and most of the others would become ship's masters on privateer vessels –– a role that caused most of the deaths of Marblehead's men in the Revolution, including Corbett’s.

Donald Doliber was appointed as Marblehead’s Town Historian after 24 years as an award-winning history teacher, who was selected as the "Outstanding American History Teacher in the United States" by the Daughters of the American Revolution (D.A.R.), followed by 17 years as an assistant high school principal. His ancestors arrived in Marblehead in the 1630s, and were fishermen, selectmen, and merchants in the early community and later, and a few served in the Revolutionary War.

This event is presented in collaboration with the Marblehead 250 Committee and Abbot Public Library.&nbsp;

This program is funded in part by a grant from the Marblehead Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency.

Join Kevin from The Power of Speech for an interest-based hangout and social group for kids ages 9-13. The topic for this month will be: STEAM Challenges! Come hang out and get creative with fun challenges to build problem-solving skills and have fun!

Bring characters to life through personality traits, emotions, dialogue, and point of view! This three-week writing workshop series is designed to help students ages 8-12 strengthen their writing skills and enjoy the creative writing process. Each session will combine age-appropriate instruction with entertaining and engaging activities to reinforce core writing fundamentals.
Students will have the opportunity to practice developing narratives, work on sentence structure and word choice, and build confidence in their writing, all while enjoying the process of creating and sharing their own original work in a group setting.

Registration is required and limited to 12 students ages 8-12. Imagination Station Writing Workshop: Character Development

Many men from Marblehead fought in the American Revolution. Most were part of the 14th Continental, known as Glover’s Regiment. There were also sea captains, privateers and sailors who served the cause in Washington’s fleet and America’s first Navy. Some patriots fought in other ways, serving on Committees and attending the early Continental Congress. Many of the participants never returned home, dying on battlefields or at sea. But those buried in Marblehead’s graveyards help us remember our town’s role in the nation’s fight for independence. The discussion will focus on the graves of local heroes, and how they supported the Revolutionary cause.
Pam Peterson is the Chair of the Marblehead Historical Commission, which focuses on projects that protect and preserve Marblehead’s historic properties. She serves on the Old Burial Hill Oversight Committee and the recently established Harris Street Cemeteries Oversight Committee. She is the former Executive Director of the Marblehead Museum and has written extensively about Marblehead history. Her current book, “A Guide to Historic Burial Grounds of Marblehead,” represents an overview of local gravesites that preserve our local and national history, which serve as primary documents of lives that have shaped our nation.
