Cathedral of St John

The Cathedral of St. John will present a special Good Friday meditation featuring the New Mexico premiere of Via Crucis (The Way of the Cross) by British composer Philip Moore. This powerful and contemplative work will be performed at 3:00 PM on Friday, April 3, 2026, at the Cathedral of St. John, 318 Silver Ave SW in downtown Albuquerque.
Via Crucis combines a sequence of deeply reflective prayers by Eric Milner-White with expressive organ meditations composed by Moore. The Very Rev’d Kristina Ann Maulden, Dean and Rector of the Cathedral, will serve as narrator, with Canon Dr. Maxine Thévenot, Director of Cathedral Music, performing the organ score.
The music ranges from hushed introspection to dramatic intensity, offering listeners a profound meditation on the Passion of Christ. The interplay between spoken word and organ creates a moving and cohesive spiritual journey through the Stations of the Cross.
Enhancing this year’s presentation is a significant visual arts collaboration: fifteen local artists have each created an original work inspired by one of the Stations. Each piece will be displayed in conjunction with its corresponding prayer and musical meditation, creating a multi-sensory experience that brings together word, music, and image. The integration of these visual interpretations adds a powerful contemporary dimension to the ancient devotional tradition.
This unique artistic offering invites the community into a space of reflection, reverence, and creative expression during the solemn observance of Good Friday. All welcome.

Enjoy an afternoon recital featuring three captivating and emotionally powerful art song cycles by Robert Schumann, Francis Poulenc, and Manuel de Falla.A proponent of new music, Jacqueline Zander-Wall has premiered works with the Composers Forum in Moscow, L’art pour l’art in Frankfurt, the Goethe Institute in Boston, Chaosma, Hugo Wolf Akademie in Stuttgart, Scala in&nbsp;Hamburg the Isabella Stewart Gardner Concert Series and the Hamburg Opera Stabile.&nbsp;
She has performed with numerous music festivals including the Aspen Music Festival, Skaneateles Music Festival, Warebrook Contemporary Music Festival,&nbsp; Music in the Mountains, Britten-Pears Festival, Hugo Wolf Akademie, Brooklyn&nbsp; Academy of Music Monteverdi Festival, and Taos Chamber Music. She has been a soloist with the Valdosta Symphony, the Asian American Symphony, the New Mexico Philharmonic, the New Haven Symphony, the Duluth Superior Symphony, Orchestra X in Houston and many orchestras and chamber ensembles throughout&nbsp; the United States and Germany.&nbsp;
After a Masters Degree from the University of California in Santa Barbara, she received a Rotary Scholarship to study in Hamburg. Further fellowships include the Boston University Opera Institute, the Music Academy of the West, the Ost&nbsp;West Musik Academie, the Britten Pears School, the Aspen Music Festival, and the&nbsp; Utah Festival Opera.&nbsp;
Opera credits include many leading roles with the Boston Lyric Opera, the Chicago Opera Theater, Arizona Opera, Hamburg Opera, Duluth Superior Symphony, New Haven Symphony, Scala in Hamburg, Opera Southwest, and Hamburg Konzertante Oper.&nbsp;
She has served on the Voice Faculty at Phillips Exeter Academy, Phillips Academy,&nbsp; the College of Santa Fe, and the University of New Mexico. Now in its seventeenth year, she founded the Vocal Artistry Art Song Festival of New Mexico, to inspire and encourage students of singing and piano in the state of New Mexico. She is currently the President of the Albuquerque Music Teachers Association.The performance and study of 20th century French music has been a passion for Louise Bass throughout her career. She studied organ performance at Indiana University and at Oklahoma City University with the legendary Wilma Jensen, who continues to mentor and inspire. Bass has worked extensively in Paris, studying with renowned organist Susan Landale. She is Artist-in-Residence in Organ at Georgia’s Piedmont University and has toured with the Piedmont Singers throughout the United States, England and Wales.
An experienced performer of sacred music, Bass has deep roots as a church musician. She has served as assistant organist at the Cathedral of St. John in Albuquerque, and she has worked as an adjunct instructor at the University of New Mexico.
She has performed at the Cathedral of St. Philip and at Spivey Hall in Atlanta, at St. James Cathedral in Chicago, and for the American Guild of Organists. She was featured guest artist at the Tuscia Music Festival in Viterbo, Italy, and has performed under the batons of Sir David Willcocks of King’s College, Cambridge; Wallace Hinson of Piedmont University; and Gerre Hancock of Manhattan’s Saint Thomas Church.

Experience this meaningful concert while making a difference in your community. At the heart of this performance is Beatitude Mass: For the Homeless&nbsp;by Henry Mollicone. Featuring soloists soprano Jennifer Perez and baritone <a href="https://www.edmundconnolly.com/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Edmund Connolly</a>, a chamber orchestra and the Choirs of The Cathedral of St. John will come together under the direction of the Cathedral’s Director of Music, Canon Dr. Maxine Thévenot.
<a href="https://www.stjohnsabq.org/sacraments#CommunityPartners" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Church Unbound</a> is a collaborative effort by Episcopal churches offering spiritual support, refreshments, and a church service to people living on the streets, meeting every weekly at the corner of Central and Charleston Street in Albuquerque. 
Tickets are $25.
