The future of Lynchburg is looking bright, thanks to the incredible young people working to strengthen our community. In partnership with T-Mobile, Patch is proud to spotlight future leaders like Natalee Coates, who are making a positive impact in and around Lynchburg.

Natalee, a student and Bonner Leader at the University of Lynchburg (Class of 2026), took on a significant leadership role in the Lynchburg Fire Department’s award-winning "Walkabout Wednesdays" initiative. Natalee analyzed fire data to identify at-risk neighborhoods, coordinated volunteers and first responders and distributed safety materials like smoke alarms and batteries.

The program’s success, which included installing 168 smoke alarms, earned the Governor’s Award for Excellence in Community Risk Reduction at the 2024 Virginia Fire Rescue Conference. LFD Deputy Chief Jonathan Wright praised Natalee’s contributions, highlighting her role in creating a sustainable community engagement program. Natalee, who is currently double-majoring in criminology and intelligence studies with a minor in crisis communication, truly exemplifies leadership and a commitment to public service.
