As the weather begins to warm up across the Merrimack Valley, many homeowners are excited to get back outside and enjoy their yards. But warmer temperatures also mean that ticks, ants, and eventually mosquitoes will soon become active again.
One thing many people don&rsquo;t realize is that ticks don&rsquo;t actually die during the winter. Instead, they go dormant and become active again once temperatures rise above freezing for extended periods of time. That&rsquo;s why many residents begin seeing ticks as early as late winter and early spring.
Mike, owner of Mosquito 180, a local mosquito and tick control company, says homeowners often underestimate how early tick activity begins.
&ldquo;People assume ticks disappear during the winter, but they&rsquo;re really just waiting for warmer temperatures,&rdquo; he explained. &ldquo;Once we start getting warmer days, they become active again very quickly.&rdquo;
Mosquitoes will typically begin emerging later in the spring as temperatures continue to rise and standing water becomes more common.
Professional mosquito and tick treatments focus on the areas where these pests live and breed, such as shaded areas, shrubs, wood lines, and under decks. Treatments are typically applied throughout the season to keep mosquito and tick populations under control.
