For over a century, it has provided boys aged nine to fifteen the most meaningful experiences of their lives. On a small island in Maine’s Belgrade Lakes, campers live unplugged—without electricity or running water. They gain the freedom to make meaningful choices, the support of a community grounded in shared values, and enough time away from home to feel both independent and integral to a unique community they help build. At the core of Turning Point is the deep and abiding belief that recovery is possible for everyone. Each individual brings their own unique story to the Center. It is through sharing these stories, which are filled with a lifetime of experiences, that we learn and teach one another the valuable lessons of recovery. The safe and supportive community of Turning Point, coupled with sharing our “lived experiences” allows everyone who comes to the Center to grow far beyond our substance use. Turning Point Recovery Support Center is funded by the Department of Public Health – Bureau of Substance Addiction Services and is part of the Massachusetts Peer Participatory Process Model, proudly hosted by Bay State Community Services (BSCS). This peer model connects individuals in recovery and ensures that our community makes their own decisions in providing support, resources, and encouragement for all paths of recovery. During regular peer community meetings, we decide on recovery activities, community groups, center policies in order to develop a safe, supportive and inclusive culture. Everyone participating at the Center thus has a voice that is heard, and an active role in maintaining and enhancing the identity of the center.
