📰 News we're reading

• Shorewood, Excelsior consider current Flock safety cameras continuation (hometownsource.com) — Excelsior’s two Flock safety cameras are under review, with city leaders preparing to debate whether the license-plate reader system’s crime-fighting benefits outweigh privacy and data‑sharing concerns. Shorewood has already shut its camera off during a state‑required audit after residents raised questions about hacking risks, federal access, and ongoing data collection, and Excelsior officials are watching those findings closely before deciding what to do next.

• UW–Madison students ‘step into the professional world with a purpose' (wisc.edu) — An Excelsior native, Caitlyn Carroll, is highlighted among recent UW–Madison grads who say their degrees strongly prepared them for careers or further study, in her case law school. New survey data show over 90% of 2024–25 bachelor’s graduates are working, serving, or continuing education within six months, with many leveraging specialized STEM or business backgrounds for advanced degrees and professional roles nationwide.

• Minnesotans Testify About the Need for a Large-Scale (Data Center) Water Permit Process (womenspress.com) — A proposed Minnesota bill would force big water users like data centers to get their own permits instead of quietly drawing from city systems, with Excelsior cited as a typical mid-size community whose entire annual water use could be matched by one facility. Lawmakers and residents from around the state warned that unchecked pumping threatens private wells and aquifers. If passed, the bill could change how future high-tech projects near Excelsior access and report water use.
