Silently Endured: Fibroids - Hackensack Meridian Health Experts Weigh in

Tackling the troubling trend of rising disease rates in younger people
Manahawkin, N.J. - March 10, 2026 - Colorectal cancer is the third most commonly diagnosed cancer in both men and women in the U.S. Once considered a disease that primarily affected older adults, it is increasingly being <a href="https://www.cancer.org/content/dam/cancer-org/research/cancer-facts-and-statistics/annual-cancer-facts-and-figures/2026/2026-cancer-facts-and-figures.pdf" rel="noopener nofollow" target="_blank">diagnosed in younger people with an increase in the death rate</a> for this population as well. The good news is that awareness and screening are powerful tools in the fight against this disease.
Overall incidence rates in colorectal cancer have steadily declined since the mid 1980s due to increased screening activity and a shift in risk factor patterns. When it comes to younger people, the news is more sobering, with a 2.9% annual increase in incidence rates reported between 2013 and 2022 for those under age 50.
While overall death rates from colorectal cancer also have been on a downward trend, the story is different for younger individuals in this category also. Mortality rates in those younger than 55 years have seen a 1% increase annually since the mid-2000s.
What's particularly concerning is that many of these younger patients are otherwise healthy, with no obvious risk factors or known genetic predispositions. In fact, colorectal cancer is now the leading cause of cancer death for men under 50 and the second for women in the same age group.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
Experts at Hackensack Meridian Health and other institutions are observing this trend firsthand and are working to understand the contributing factors. While the exact causes are still being explored, it's believed that a combination of lifestyle and environmental <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/colorectal-cancer/risk-factors/index.html" rel="noopener nofollow" target="_blank">factors</a> may play a role. These include a poor diet, characterized by high intake of processed meats, sugar and refined grains and low intake of fruits, vegetables and fiber. In addition, excessive alcohol and tobacco use, and a lack of physical activity &ndash; all considered modifiable risk factors. More than half of all colorectal cancers can be attributed to these factors, highlighting the importance of a healthy lifestyle. A family history of colorectal cancer or certain inherited conditions, like Lynch syndrome, also can significantly increase your risk.
One of the most effective weapons against colorectal cancer is early detection with colonoscopy &ndash; considered the &lsquo;gold standard&rsquo; screening method. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force updated its screening recommendations in response to the rise in cases among younger adults, now advising that those at average risk begin screening at age 45. Those with a family history of colorectal cancer, genetic predisposition, or those with unusual gastrointestinal symptoms or changes in normal gastrointestinal function, should speak to their doctor about a screening schedule that&rsquo;s right for them.&nbsp;
While the preparation for a colonoscopy can seem daunting and unpleasant, it is a small inconvenience compared to undergoing treatment for advanced cancer, which can involve surgery, chemotherapy, and more. The colonoscopy itself lasts about 30 minutes on average and is usually done with sedation making this a more comfortable procedure. While the patient is under sedation, a thin, flexible fiberoptic tube containing a small camera is inserted in the rectum where it is guided through the intestines to check for abnormalities. Colonoscopy enables polyps to be identified and removed before they develop into cancer. It can also address the disease at an earlier stage when it is easier to treat.&nbsp;
The impact of early detection on survival rates is dramatic. According to the CDC, nearly 89% of adults diagnosed with early-stage colorectal cancer live for five years or more. This is in stark contrast to the 16% five-year survival rate for those diagnosed with late-stage cancer. These numbers powerfully illustrate why screening is so crucial.

Hackensack Meridian Health Experts Urge Colorectal Cancer Screenings

Manahawkin, N.J. - March 10, 2026 - As New Jerseyans look forward to the arrival of spring and a warm up on the way, many are also bracing for the sneezing, itchy eyes, and congestion that accompany the season. With recent climate trends pointing toward longer and more intense allergy seasons, experts from Hackensack Meridian Health share what to expect for the 2026 spring allergy season and how adults and children can effectively prepare.
According to reports from state-level sources and climate analysts, New Jersey's allergy season is changing. A 2022 analysis by Climate Central, a New Jersey-based nonprofit, nonpartisan climate science and reporting organization, found that the pollen season in most of New Jersey has lengthened by anywhere from eight to 28 days since 1970. This extended season, driven by warmer temperatures and rising levels of carbon dioxide, means an earlier start for tree pollen, the primary culprit for spring allergies.
&ldquo;It will be a brisk startup due to the amount of precipitation (snow being over 12 inches) which will provide excellent nourishment for the trees once melted. The low temps will prevent an early release&nbsp; but will support a maximum release once we have temperatures maintained for 5 days above 50 degrees,&rdquo; says Leonard Bielory, M.D., Professor of Medicine on the Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine faculty, an allergist and immunologist who is the past Chair of the National Allergy Bureau that certifies pollen counting stations in the U.S. and in South and North America. He is also a longtime expert and researcher of pollen counts across the United States. Dr. Bielory has conducted the longest-running pollen counts in the Garden State since the 1980s, now as part of the Center of Aerobiological Research at Kean University.&nbsp;
&ldquo;Because we are expecting an early start to the 2026 allergy season, I advise adults and the parents of children who have allergies not to wait until symptoms such as runny nose, sneezing and itchy eyes start to manage symptoms with medication,&rdquo; says Juan Ravell, M.D., a pediatric and adult allergist and immunologist at Hackensack Meridian Hackensack University Medical Center. 
"In children, in particular, allergy symptoms can sometimes be subtle. It might not be constant sneezing but rather persistent nasal congestion, or frequent rubbing of the eyes and nose. These symptoms can impact everything from their quality of sleep to their concentration in school. It's important for parents to observe these signs, as untreated allergies can affect a child's overall well-being," he says.
An accurate diagnosis is key, as a specialist can identify your specific triggers and create a personalized treatment plan that goes beyond over-the-counter remedies to provide real relief, says <a href="https://www.getcare.hackensackmeridianhealth.org/provider/daniel-vincent-digiacomo/2618594" rel="noopener nofollow" target="_blank">Daniel DiGiacomo, M.D.</a>, pediatric allergy and immunology physician, K.Hovnanian Children&rsquo;s Hospital at Hackensack Meridian Jersey Shore University Medical Center.
"Managing a child's allergies is a team effort. We encourage parents to develop an 'allergy action plan' with their pediatrician or allergist. This plan should be shared with the school nurse and teachers,&rdquo; says Dr. DiGiacomo. 
&ldquo;Simple strategies, such as&nbsp; having your child wash their hands and face after playing outside and changing their clothes, can significantly reduce pollen exposure. For children with more significant symptoms, prescription nasal sprays or antihistamines can be very effective and allow them to participate in activities without being uncomfortable," he adds.
