SUSSEX COUNTY, NJ — A Passaic County man is facing charges after he had made threats to himself and reported them to police, according to authorities.

Nathan W. Slingland, 22, of West Milford, was issued several charges on Sept. 22, the Franklin Borough Police announced on Tuesday.

Police said that on June 11 and June 22, two reports were taken by police from Slingland, who claimed he was receiving “threatening and harassing” cell phone messages from two people he knows.

An investigation revealed that the messages were being sent by phone numbers through “third-party texting applications,” according to officials

Further investigation showed that those applications were linked to Slingland’s email accounts and recovery phone numbers, showing he had full control of the messages, police said.

Police determined that Slingland had sent the threats to himself and falsely reported them in an attempt to incriminate others, according to authorities.

Slingland was charged with two counts of false reports to law enforcement incriminating another. If convicted, the 22-year-old faces a maximum of 10 years in prison and up to $15,000 in fines.
