Public Meeting Notice

This is a better late than never post. This year the National Invasive Species Awareness Week (NISAW) occurred from February 23rd through February 27th. NISAW is an international event to raise awareness about invasive species, the threat that they pose, and what can be done to prevent their spread. Representatives from local, state, federal, and regional organizations discuss legislation, policies, funding, and improvements that can be made to prevent and manage invasive species. Invasive species impact everyone. When not monitored or controlled, invasive species can cause harm to our economy, environment, or human health. The term "invasive" is used for non-native species, both flora and fauna, that grow and reproduce rapidly, displace native species, and cause major disturbance to the areas in which they are present.
Unfortunately, invasives have thrived and done tremendous damage already here in New Jersey. A couple of examples are the emerald ash bore, which has decimated our once beautiful ash trees and the Autumn Olive Trees (pictured in this post) and the Japanese Barberry that are overtaking our open spaces. One simple thing that all of us can do help minimize the damage cause by invasives is to not plant them in our gardens at home. Most people are not aware that many of these plants are available for sale in garden centers throughout the state. Simply by educating yourself on plants that are invasive and practical native alternatives to these plants will go a long way to improve the situation .Some helpful &ldquo;plant this, not that&rdquo; informational website are:
