Hear from some of our members about current and past activities. Our History The Ethical Humanist Society of Long Island (EHSLI) began in 1950 as an offshoot of the New York Ethical Culture Society. After gathering in temporary spaces, members pooled resources to build our Garden City facility, which opened in 1959. Our foundations lie in the work of Dr. Felix Adler, the German-American philosopher who established the Ethical Culture movement in New York City in 1876. Adler proposed a non-theistic approach to uniting humanity through shared ethical values. His career focused on creating meaningful lives and fostering better human relationships through his writings and lectures. Today's Ethical Humanist movement unites people from diverse backgrounds committed to improving our world through ethical action. The Garden City Bird Sanctuary ("GCBS") is a 9 acre nature preserve located at 182 Tanners Pond Road. Our season runs from the last weekend of April through the last full weekend of September. During our season we are open on weekends only from 10 AM–6 PM, weather permitting. (Thanks to our dedicated Volunteer Corps!) There is no charge to visit. The Garden City Bird Sanctuary, Inc. is a certified 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and operates solely on donations and volunteers. For over a century, it has provided boys aged nine to fifteen the most meaningful experiences of their lives. On a small island in Maine’s Belgrade Lakes, campers live unplugged—without electricity or running water. They gain the freedom to make meaningful choices, the support of a community grounded in shared values, and enough time away from home to feel both independent and integral to a unique community they help build.
