SAN FRANCISCO, CA — The Parkside neighborhood now has a mochi doughnut shop to walk, bike, scooter or even run to: MoDo Hawaii.

The eatery's soft opening got underway August 26, and staff have been preparing for the official grand opening, happening Friday, Saturday and Sunday, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The MoDo Hawaii team had initially announced their plans to open the San Francisco shop in an Instagram post in July.

“We had been looking at San Francisco for a long time — and for the right space,” said Jason Leung, MoDo Hawaii’s marketing manager.

As was the case for many small businesses, the COVID-19 pandemic was “a bit difficult” for MoDo Hawaii, Leung said, in that they had to close their locations in Southern California and Honolulu in 2022.

Their South Bay location, in Santa Clara, has been a success, and the MoDo Hawaii team anticipates a positive response to their new address on Taraval Street.

“We're excited to be in San Francisco and cater to the crowd and the audience there,” Leung said.

Throughout the grand opening, customers who purchase a dozen doughnuts will then get six more for free.

Leung also shared with Patch that the first 100 guests will get a free pin featuring the “MoDo Boys,” MoDo Hawaii’s mascot. The color of the pin will differ on each grand opening day. Plus, there’s a Nintendo Switch 2 giveaway opportunity.

MoDo Hawaii's menu offerings include the glazed doughnut flavors of matcha green tea, milk chocolate, cookies & cream, black sesame, lilikoi (passion fruit) and tiramisu; sugar mochi doughnuts; poke bowls and soy lattes.

They also have a mochi doughnut "flavor of the month," with September's being papaya.

MoDo Hawaii's address is 1353 Taraval St., San Francisco. It's open daily from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
