WHEATON, IL — Penny's Place, a cafe and restaurant with video gaming, is seeking zoning approval to open in Wheaton. Petitioners hope to open the restaurant in the 22W535 Butterfield Rd. shopping plaza, which is also home to Anny's Slots at M&W Thai, Park Liquors and Eurus Deli.

On Oct. 20, city council members will review a conditional use permit and a zoning variation request for Penny's Place. The latter request seeks an exception to the city's requirement that a video gaming restaurant be located 1000 feet or more from another video gaming restaurant or "place of assembly use."

At the proposed location, Penny's Place would be 400 feet from St. Barnabas Episcopal Church and less than 1,000 feet from Anny's Slots.

The requests were reviewed by representatives from DuPage County District 4. City documents show that the representatives recommend that "the city council express an objection or concern regarding the proposed zoning petition." Per the recommendation, District 4 deemed "that these requests are excessive, and the petition will be injurious to the neighborhood, negatively impact public welfare, or otherwise affect the public health, safety, comfort, or morals of the residents of DuPage County."

The DuPage County Board of Appeals has planned a public hearing for Oct. 29 at 6 p.m. at 421 County Farm Rd.
