• Suffolk still the top population growth area in Hampton Roads, census data shows (pilotonline.com) — Suffolk is leading Hampton Roads in population growth, adding nearly 10,000 residents since 2020 for a 10.4% jump, one of the biggest increases in Virginia. New census estimates show people continuing to move from core cities to outer localities like Suffolk, reshaping where future housing, schools, and services will be needed across the region.
   

• School Board approves $257 million budget (suffolknewsherald.com) — Suffolk’s School Board has approved a $257.1 million budget for 2026-27, including a request for $95.2 million from City Council, with only one member voting no. The plan boosts local funding and includes a 2% staff raise, while some board members push for more investment in special education, higher raises, and better-qualified personnel.
   

• Rebuilding the Edgerton raptor program (auroranewsregister.com) — A Suffolk-based wildlife rescuer is helping an out-of-state science center rebuild its raptor program after a devastating February fire. Tommy White of Alton’s Keep in Suffolk, Va., has provided a barred owl and red-shouldered hawk that will eventually join a bald eagle in educating visitors, while plans move forward to reconstruct the burned enclosure and highlight his rehabilitation work.
