FAIRFAX CITY, VA — City of Fairfax Police arrested a 30-year-old Fairfax woman for assault, after a bottle she smashed injured another person early Tuesday morning, according to authorities.

Around 2:09 a.m., officers responded to the 3800 block of University Drive for the report of an assault.

"The reporting party stated that after an argument, a female known to them purposely smashed a glass bottle near them resulting in multiple cuts," according to the incident report. "The victim declined any medical treatment."

During their investigation, the officers located the suspect nearby and determined that she was under the influence of alcohol, accord to police. They arrested Grissell Bernal of Fairfax and charged her with simple assault and being drunk in public. She was then taken to the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center, where she was held until she was deemed sober.

Bernal has a preliminary hearing scheduled for Oct. 23 in Fairfax General District Court, according to court records.

The assault and battery charge is a Class 1 misdemeanor. If convicted on this charge, Bernal could sentenced up to 12 months in jail, fined up to $2,500, or both, under the Virginia Code. The drunk in public charge is a Class 4 misdemeanor, which is punishable by a fine of up to $450.
